Operating Engineers are the first on a construction job and the last off. Operating Engineers operate the dozers, the motor graders, the backhoes, and the cranes helping to form and shape the infrastructure and skylines. When the construction site involves a commercial or industrial complex, stationary engineers are there long after the construction is finished, operating and maintaining the completed facility. Apprentice wages range from $23.90-$34.76. The journey level wage is $43.46.

Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.
