Medical assistants are multi-skilled professionals who assist physicians with the administrative and clinical aspects of patient care. This certificate is designed to be completed in three (3) semesters on a full-time basis. The certificate consists of open enrollment courses (general education and division specific) and program specific courses with limited enrollment. The open enrollment courses may be taken prior to entry into the limited enrollment courses. To qualify for entry to limited enrollment courses, please see the Applicant Information packet located on the webpage. A cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required, as well as a grade of C or higher in all certificate courses.

Medical Assistants
Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.

Admissions
The student will be required to complete 210 hours of unpaid supervised practicum during their third semester of the certificate. Note: Healthcare Professional CPR, health certificate, immunizations, student health insurance, and background check must be completed prior to enrolling in the practicum component of the curriculum. The graduate is eligible to sit for a national exam to become a credentialed medical assistant.
