The Dental Assisting Program at San José City College combines theoretical technical knowledge with practical application. The curriculum includes topics in oral and dental anatomy and physiology, patient charting, infection control, radiography, emergency procedures, nutrition, business office procedures, general dentistry, and dental specialties. Students practice clinical skills using mannequins and specialized dental equipment such as intraoral cameras and digital radiography. Team building skills are taught through group practice and cooperative learning opportunities, and advanced students work in community dental offices to develop clinical expertise in a professional working environment.

Perform limited clinical duties under the direction of a dentist. Clinical duties may include equipment preparation and sterilization, preparing patients for treatment, assisting the dentist during treatment, and providing patients with instructions for oral healthcare procedures. May perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes.

Admissions
The Dental Assisting Program is FULL-TIME Monday through Thursday 8:30-2:30 and Friday 8:30-5:00. It is recommended students practice after school each day. Students must register in ALL six courses. There is no partial enrollment. Counselors will assist with the registration process.
