The Medical Assisting certificate is designed “to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains” for an entry-level position as a Medical Assistant in a private medical office, clinic or other health care facility. Both clinical and administrative skills are included in the course work. On-the-job experience is provided by a total of 180 unpaid hours of practicum placement with a licensed health care practitioner.

Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.
