Students admitted to the dental assisting program are required to attend an orientation before dental assisting classes begin. A letter will be sent by the program Coordinator with the date, location and time of the meeting. Most Dental Assistants work in dental offices for private or group practices. Additional opportunities are available in dental schools, public health departments, hospitals, prisons, military installations, and community clinics. Dental Assisting can lead to other educational advancements in the field of dentistry including dental hygiene, dental lab technician, or dentistry. Becoming a CDA will permit the CDA to perform expanded functions designated by the Dental Practice Act. A Felony conviction could affect an applicant’s ability to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board.

Perform limited clinical duties under the direction of a dentist. Clinical duties may include equipment preparation and sterilization, preparing patients for treatment, assisting the dentist during treatment, and providing patients with instructions for oral healthcare procedures. May perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes.
