Students will receive training to become medical assistants and phlebotomists through a combination of lectures, labs, and a paid clinical externship with Kaiser Permanente or UCSF. Students will learn to perform a variety of clinical procedures, including assisting with minor surgery, performing electrocardiograms, administering medications, performing vitals, phlebotomy, and maintaining equipment in an ambulatory care setting. Graduates will have the necessary skills and certification to gain employment in clinics, laboratories, physician offices, and other outpatient facilities. Past graduates have been employed by Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, and UCSF through staffing agencies MGA and Aerotek, Dignity Health, Planned Parenthood, Genentech, and several local clinics (urology, optometry, ophthalmology),

Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.

Applicants must not have successfully completed another medical assistant program Ability to provide current immunization records, including the following: be in good standing with San Francisco State University & San Francisco State University College of Extended Learning English literacy and basic math skills Updated immunization records Complete COVID-19 immunizations (all COVID-19 vaccine doses, including booster – if no current booster, date of second COVID vaccination dose needs to have occurred by January 24, 2022)
