What is an Operating Engineer? An Operating Engineer is a person who works as a heavy equipment operator, mechanic, welder, or surveyor. The heavy equipment operator works on construction projects operating a variety of equipment such as a bulldozer, backhoes, forklifts, cranes, excavators, etc. What is an Operating Engineer Apprentice? An Apprentice is an individual who has signed a legal agreement to learn the trade of Operating Engineer through a combined program of work experience (on-the-job training) and classroom instruction (related training). Through the Apprenticeship Agreement, the Apprentice is also registered with the New York State Department of Labor.

Operating Engineers and Other Construction Equipment Operators
Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.
