IBEW Local 40 apprentices “earn while they learn“, which means they earn a living wage while they work and receive on-the-job training from experienced journeymen. This provides apprentices with valuable insights about their particular craft and helps them gain a thorough understanding of different aspects of their job. In addition to learning on the job site, apprentices also receive free, mandatory classroom instruction, where they are taught many of the fundamentals and advanced concepts they will use throughout their careers.

Admissions
Minimum Requirements (IF APPLYING @ IBEW LOCAL 40): Each applicant must:
- Be 18 years of age or older, with proof of identification, such as a drivers’ license or identification card issued by the D.M.V. (Must have a valid drivers’ license at time of indenture).
- Have a High School diploma, G.E.D. or H.S.P.E.
- Official and Sealed Transcripts showing passing grades equivalent to a “C” or better for two (2) semesters or one (1) year of high school Algebra or one (1) semester of college Algebra or provide evidence of having successfully completed the NJATC Online Tech Math Course. To access the course, go to http://www.njatc.utk.edu. Enrollment fee charged.
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or meet the I-9 requirements of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).
- Must not have taken the NJATC Aptitude Test within the last 6 months.
