If you have strong communication skills, enjoy working with your hands as well as your mind and want a career with responsibility, dental assisting could be for you. Students in the Dental Assistant program will learn dental terminology, disease transmission, disinfection and sterilization, dental anatomy, dental records and charting, instrumentation, impressions and castings, radiation health and safety, insurance and billing and front desk responsibilities. This course also provides x-ray training that qualifies you to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Radiation Health and Safety Examination.

Dental Assistants
Perform limited clinical duties under the direction of a dentist. Clinical duties may include equipment preparation and sterilization, preparing patients for treatment, assisting the dentist during treatment, and providing patients with instructions for oral healthcare procedures. May perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes.

Admissions
- Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must complete the Reading (NGR) and Math (NGA) Assessments, available at the Test Center
- (College-level courses and SAT/ACT scores (500+) may be used in place of the NGR and NGA)
- Must obtain Healthcare Provider BLS CPR certification through the American Heart Association (AHA); prior to externship.
- Must complete a Health Assessment, including immunization record; prior to externship.
- Scrubs are provided but students must purchase a Harford Community College patch at The College Store.
