The Practical Nursing Certificate program is designed to prepare graduates to provide health care to clients of various ages in a variety of health care settings. The Practical Nursing Certificate program is sequential and it helps students to develop communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Nursing courses are structured to promote student learning through lecture, laboratory, clinical, seminar, simulation and practicum experiences. Learning opportunities are designed to apply practical nursing concepts in the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health for clients. Students learn to work collaboratively with other health team members in the health care delivery system.

Students must apply and be accepted to the program. It is recommended that students review the program Admission steps on the Nursing Department web pages. Additionally, potential students should meet with an Academic Advisor to verify they have all requirements met. PN Criteria for Admission: 18 years of age or older by the first day of the first Practical Nursing course. The program admission requirements include: NURC 1001 at Columbus State or received the Ohio State Tested Nurse Aid (STNA) issued within the last five year. Additional program admission requirements include a GED or HS transcript, 2.6 GPA and Good Academic Standing; if the applicant does not have a college GPA, then the student must have a high school GPA of 2.6 or an ACT composite score of 18 or above wthin the last four years. Students mmust place into CHEM 0100, BIO 0100, and ENGL 1100, or above. The HESI A2 (75% passing including Science) is required. Students have two attempts to take the HESI A2 to pass. Upon conditional acceptance, students must complete a drug screen and background check with no positive results prior to beginning the program. This HESI A2 test needs to be taken at Columbus State Community College. For information about the HESIA2 test or to make an appointment to sit for the exam, please call 614-287-5750.  A grade of "C" or higher is required for each of the courses on this plan of study.
