Basic Law Enforcement Training is a curriculum course offered at most community colleges, commonly referred to as a Police Academy. Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise. This program utilizes State commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to:
- criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic and alcoholic beverage laws
- physical training
- investigative, patrol, custody and court procedures
- emergency responses
- ethics and community relations The program consists of 640 mandated hours and meets for approximately 16 weeks, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Police and Sheriff's Patrol Officers
Maintain order and protect life and property by enforcing local, tribal, state, or federal laws and ordinances. Perform a combination of the following duties: patrol a specific area; direct traffic; issue traffic summonses; investigate accidents; apprehend and arrest suspects, or serve legal processes of courts. Includes police officers working at educational institutions.
