Approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, Butler Tech’s Basic Police Academy is one of the top programs in the state. The scenario-based curriculum prepares cadets for employment in law enforcement upon graduation. To be eligible for OPOTC certification as a peace officer, cadets will need to successfully complete certain skill-based student performance objectives (SPO’s), meet higher physical fitness assessment standards, and pass a written state certification exam (SCE) showing knowledge of cognitive-based SPO’s.

Police and Sheriff's Patrol Officers
Maintain order and protect life and property by enforcing local, tribal, state, or federal laws and ordinances. Perform a combination of the following duties: patrol a specific area; direct traffic; issue traffic summonses; investigate accidents; apprehend and arrest suspects, or serve legal processes of courts. Includes police officers working at educational institutions.

Requirements to enroll:
- Be 20 ½ at the start date of the academy
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Have a high school diploma or equivalency
- Pass the Physical Fitness Standards
- Background check free of any state or federal firearms disqualifiers (inquire with the Commander if you have concerns with items on your record)
