The Police Academy Basic Training Program is a limited access program. Courses are held at the Institute of Public Safety, located at A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. The Institute is certified by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission to provide basic and advanced training. The Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training prepares students as entry-level law enforcement officers in the State of Florida. Practical skills and simulated activities complement the classroom instruction. This minimum standards program is regulated by Florida statutes and is a highly structured and disciplined program

Police and Sheriff's Patrol Officers
Maintain order and protect life and property by enforcing local, tribal, state, or federal laws and ordinances. Perform a combination of the following duties: patrol a specific area; direct traffic; issue traffic summonses; investigate accidents; apprehend and arrest suspects, or serve legal processes of courts. Includes police officers working at educational institutions.

Admissions
Requirements for entry into the Police Academy are:
- U.S. citizenship
- Age 19 or higher
- Good driving record with no tickets
- Possess a high school diploma or GED (college background highly desirable)
- Clean criminal record Test requirements are:
- Florida Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test for Law Enforcement (CJBAT)
- Basic Motor Skills Test (Agility)
- Swim Test
