What does a Carpenter do?
- Carpenters are involved in many types of construction such as residential, commercial, and industrial, and work in diverse settings.
- Carpenters cut, shape, fit, and assemble building materials using the latest power tools.
- Carpenters work with a variety of materials including wood, metal, concrete, and plastics. ABC NorCal’s Carpentry Apprenticeship Program lasts a minimum of four years and 4,800 on-the-job training hours. The majority of experience is gained through practical on-the-job training. A normal workweek is 40 hours, however, it can vary depending on weather conditions, job delays, or other unforeseen circumstances. Apprentices should be prepared to travel to job sites and training locations.

Carpenters
Construct, erect, install, or repair structures and fixtures made of wood and comparable materials, such as concrete forms; building frameworks, including partitions, joists, studding, and rafters; and wood stairways, window and door frames, and hardwood floors. May also install cabinets, siding, drywall, and batt or roll insulation. Includes brattice builders who build doors or brattices (ventilation walls or partitions) in underground passageways.
