Equipment Operator 1 1.7 1.7 out of 5 stars Margate, FL Department Parks & Recreation Location City of Margate; FL Position Type FT Employee Salary $45,778 to $64,228 Date 2024.10.01 Description General Statement of Job Under the general supervision of a department supervisor performs skilled maintenance and construction work through the operation of heavy equipment and machinery. Employee possesses journeyman knowledge of various public services construction repair and maintenance activities policies and procedures. Employee performs all work according to established safety standards codes and regulations applicable to the work. Employee works with independence and limited supervision and functions in a lead capacity in the absence of a supervisor. Essential Functions The following duties and functions; as outlined herein; are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this position. They are not listed in any order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned. Operates complex and heavy mechanical equipment; including but not limited to bobcat; backhoe; loader; bucket truck; tractor (including operation of all associated attachments); Toro Spray Master; box blade; and aerator. Performs routine safety inspections of operating equipment and mechanical systems; performs maintenance; makes moderately complex repairs; and assists in complex repairs of equipment and vehicles. Operates a wide variety of construction equipment and tools; operates various standard hand-held manual; electrical; and gas powered tools and equipment; operates a variety of specialized specific tools and equipment. Performs minor maintenance and repair on City property as directed. Cleans debris and refuse from City property regularly; and in response to emergency cleanup orders. Assists other skilled personnel in construction projects and cleanup as directed. Performs Emergency Response duties as assigned. Performs related work as required. Minimum Training and Experience High school diploma or GED supplemented with a minimum of five (5) years of responsible work experience in a Public Works/Parks/Utilities or construction-related position; including five (5) years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class "B" CDL driver's license.
Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve walking; standing; bending; stooping; some lifting and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight (20-50 pounds); and occasionally very heavy (100+ pounds) items.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional; or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data; people or things.
Interpersonal Communication:
Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions; assignments and/or directions.

Requires the ability to read basic English.

Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to performing semi-repetitive tasks and principles of rational systems.

Must communicate in basic English.

Requires the ability to add and subtract. May require the ability to multiply and divide.
Form/Spatial Aptitude:
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length; width and shape; and visually read various information.
Motor Coordination:
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately for manipulating small items.
Manual Dexterity:
Requires the ability to operate various electrical equipment. Must have excellent levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination:
Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament:
Requires the ability to deal with people from a variety of departments and backgrounds in receiving instructions.
Physical Communication:
Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing and exchanging information by means of spoken word; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
Environmental Requirements:
Tasks require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Knowledge; Skills; and Abilities Knowledge and training of procedures; equipment and methods utilized in the heavy equipment trade. Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trades. Knowledge of governmental and oversight requirements; codes; and regulations; etc. Skilled in operating various heavy construction equipment and machinery. Skilled in operating various automobiles; light and heavy trucks; mechanical equipment; and other gasoline and diesel-driven motors; such as service trucks; forklifts; backhoe; grader; bulldozer; and dump trucks. Skilled in the utilization of hand and power tools. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors; fellow employees; and vendors. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records as required by supervisor or oversight entity.
