Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs major and minor repairs on apparatus and equipment, such as engine overhauls, major pump repairs, and hydraulic equipment repairs to ensure they will perform under emergency conditions; Makes major improvements or modifications to new or existing fire apparatus in accordance with the needs and specifications; Road service work is required. CDL preferred but not required. Clean driving record required. Provides expert repairs and guidance on braking systems, to include ABS, heavy duty air brake systems including manual and automatic slack adjusters, dryers, compressors, valves, regulators, etc. Performs drivability test drives and diagnoses drive train and chassis problems; Removes, repairs, replaces and overhauls driveline components, i.e. clutches, transmissions, torque converters, differentials, power dividers, transfer cases, hubs, spindles, etc.; Performs mechanical, electrical, and fluid repairs which may require use of specialized equipment including test gauges, computer links, scan tools, power tools, pyrometers, digital voltmeters, scopes, etc.; Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs equipment, fuel, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems; Tests and diagnoses computer feedback devices, i.e. 02 sensors, TPS, MAPS, knock, and other sensors; Performs diesel engine opacity tests as needed; Ensures close communication with service manager to coordinate equipment repair and preventative maintenance work; Attends training courses and maintains current proficiency related to emergency operations and fire apparatus maintenance; Ensures quality control and inspection of outside contractors that perform work on fire apparatus; Trains and oversees other mechanics assisting in the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment; Performs all other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
A high school diploma or GED is required. Specialized training in automotive mechanic and diesel equipment strongly preferred.Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years of progressive mechanic experience. Preference given for experiencein diagnosing, maintaining and repairing diesel/heavy equipment.License:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.Certifications:
Must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) F-1 Inspection certifications within one year of hire. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred but not required. Environmental Conditions & Physical Demands Large percentage of time spent in automotive repair shop environment with ongoing exposure to noise, dirt and fumes/odors from chemicals, petroleum products, cleaning agents, etc. Job also requires work to be performed outside with exposure to adverse weather conditions such as wet, ice, mud, high humidity and temperature extremes. May occasionally be exposed to carcinogens and toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact. With or without reasonable accommodation, performance of essential job functions requires the employee to possess sufficient: Personal mobility, stamina, flexibility and balance to perform maintenance and repair functions that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching or other physical exertions which permits the employee to work under vehicles, in cramped spaces to remove, service and replace parts and components. Strength to lift and carry 50-pound objects for varying distances. Ability to climb, test and work on ladders and aerial lifts up to 100 feet. Ability to endure prolonged exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, and prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions. Clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, alarm and warning systems, including backup alarms, and to diagnosis engine problems and relay maintenance needs to customers. Vision and other powers of observation which permits the employee to perceive and discriminate color or shades of color, comprehend written work instructions and work orders, inspect heavy equipment and automotive parts, fluid levels, equipment operation and make necessary repairs. Manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate a variety to automotive shop tools and make adjustments to equipment.Job Type:
