The job title and job duties are subject to change . The Port of San Diego is seeking a skilled and experienced Equipment Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of industry principles, best practices, and the operation of various types of heavy machinery. Responsibilities include operating, maintaining and performing minor repairs on various equipment, such as truck and trailer, front loader, backhoe, motor grader, street sweeper, skid steer, excavator, forklift, crane truck, etc. Candidates must hold a Class A license with a solid understanding of its requirements and demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a variety of projects. This role operates under the guidance of the Lead Equipment Operator, with expectations for the Equipment Operator to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and make informed decisions within established policies and procedures. Success in this position requires reliability, dependability, and accountability in fulfilling all responsibilities.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, operates a variety of light-, medium- and heavy-duty motorized maintenance and construction equipment; maintains, services and performs minor maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey-level class in the Equipment Operator series. Incumbents operate the full range of the District's equipment in support of the General Services Department's maintenance and construction crews. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound, independent judgment and initiative. Incumbents may be assigned helpers/ assistants from lower-level classes and provide on-the-job training to those employees. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified. 1. Operates a wide variety of light, medium and heavy-duty motorized equipment in support of the District's maintenance and construction activities; safely and skillfully operates backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, man lifts, graders, heavy-duty cranes, light- and heavy-duty trucks, dump trucks, rollers, graders, excavators, tractor-trailers, and similar construction and maintenance equipment. 2. Operates a heavy-duty motorized street sweeper to clean streets, roadways, parking lots, marine terminals and over paved and asphalt-surfaced areas. 3. Responds to traffic accidents and other situations requiring special cleanup of streets, parking lots and other areas. 4. Cuts and finishes grades; excavates utility trenches, places piping and backfills trenches; resurfaces streets, parking lots and roadways. 5. Safely loads and transports maintenance and construction equipment to job sites. 6. Reads and understands survey markings, blueprint drawings and dig-alert markings. 7. Riggs and operates heavy-duty cranes. 8. Supervises and provides on-the-job training to assigned personnel. 9. Sets up barricades, cones and other safety devices and practices when working in traffic. 10. Ensures District motorized equipment is maintained and operated in compliance with all laws, codes and regulations. 11. Inspects, services, adjusts, lubricates, cleans and maintains assigned equipment. 12. Maintains records and reports.
Qualifications Knowledge of:
1. Maintenance, adjustment and operation of complex light, medium and heavy-duty construction equipment. 2. Safe work practices related to operating assigned equipment, including operating equipment in public streets and roadways. 3. Relevant laws, codes and regulations. 4. California Vehicle Code regulations pertaining to the operation of motorized maintenance and construction equipment on public streets and roadways. 5. Computer applications applicable to assigned work duties.
Ability to:
1. Skillfully operate assigned equipment safely in traffic. 2. Adjust and perform preventive maintenance and make minor repairs on vehicles and auxiliary equipment. 3. Work independently and use sound judgment in performing assignments safely in traffic. 4. Understand and follow oral and written instruction. 5. Prepare basic records and reports of work performed. 6. Operate and maintain hand and power tools pertaining to the work. 7. Safety practices and procedures related to the work. 8. Read and understand street maps, survey markings and blueprints drawings. 9. Coordinate work assignments with other sections, departments, divisions or agencies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, and three years of experience in the operation of medium- and heavy-duty construction equipment. Time served as a District Intern counts towards the years of experience. Licenses; Certificates;
Special Requirements:
A current, valid California Class A and C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business. Employee shall become NCCCO certified to operate a fixed cab telescopic boom crane within one year of hire date. A valid first aid and CPR certification may be required and, if required, must be maintained throughout District employment. The District reserves the right to change or add to any of the stated licensing requirements at any time, as required by law, regulation or business necessity.
Employees may be required to:
serve on an on-call or stand-by basis; work on assigned shifts, on weekends and work overtime. If assigned to perform work at any of the District's maritime facilities, you must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal and State requirements.
