POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for determining project needs and requirements from design through obtaining materials and performing skilled electrical installation, operation and maintenance of building systems, including lighting, power, climate control, security, and communications. The incumbent is responsible for installing, modifying, troubleshooting, loading, testing, and preventative maintenance of new and existing electrical lines, circuit systems, fixtures controls, and equipment; and ensuring work meets acceptable trade standards. The incumbent wires, installs, repairs and maintains electrical systems and components; such as motors, generators, transformers, switches, circuit breakers, fuse boxes, outlets, and lighting fixtures. This role also involves installing and performing preventative maintenance to minimize breakdowns, and supporting general building maintenance by repairing air conditioning equipment, adjusting building temperature, removing snow, ensuring safe facility access, setting up and breaking down offices and meeting rooms, and moving furniture and equipment as required. The incumbent is familiar with the Life Safety System which includes the fire alarm system, Wet and Dry Pipe Sprinkler System. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or equivalent and formal technical or on-the-job training in HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master electrician license for the District of Columbia. Three years' electrical experience in office, commercial and outdoor environments which include installing, repairing and maintaining multiple building systems, i.e., lighting, power, climate control, security, and communications. Experience as a mechanic in another trade, such as plumbing or air conditioning/refrigeration.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must also be CFC (chlorofluorocarbons) Certified. Ability to be "on call" to deal with delays, bad weather or emergencies. Assigned shift will be a swing shift with 8 continuous hours between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. (night differential as appropriate), Saturdays to Fridays.
Selection Criteria:
Tier 1 (Essential): In-depth knowledge of electrical theory, including ability to use formulas basic to the trade to compute voltage and resistance. Skill in removing and replacing fixtures and controls, to make repairs such as tightening connections, wrapping exposed wiring, soldering loose leads, and rearranging or installing new outlets, relays, switches, light fixtures, and test circuits. Demonstrated knowledge of electrical, wire, and communications systems, including computerized systems. Working knowledge of other building systems, such as plumbing. Proven knowledge of various gauges, sizes, and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relay boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices. Proven ability to establish objectives, implement procedures and develop methods to measure effectiveness. Demonstrated skill in assessing, analyzing and resolving system/equipment problems and providing recommendations. Good interpersonal and customer relations skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work effectively under pressure. Proven skill in making decisions. Effective oral and written communication skills. Successful references. TIER 2 (Significant): Proven ability to coordinate multiple major activities/projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to read and understand plans, specifications, blueprints and contracts. TIER 3 (Desirable): Refrigeration engineer's license.
