Lee County Solid Waste is hiring for an Automotive and Heavy Equipment Mechanic. The incumbent will perform skilled work in the preventative maintenance, diagnosis, repair, rebuilding, and replacement of parts on county vehicles and heavy equipment. Ensure safe and timely repairs in a fast-paced environment while adhering to all regulations and county policies. Maintain, diagnose, and repair a variety of equipment, including cars, and heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, heavy-duty field tractors, mowing and maintenance equipment, sweeper trucks, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, semi-road tractors, flatbed, dump, and walking floor trailers, among other types of equipment. We seek a candidate who provides excellent service, maintains strong customer relationships, takes pride in quality and safety, and meets high standards. Duties are performed under the general direction of a Fleet Mechanic Supervisor or designee and are evaluated based on accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness. Duties and Responsibilities Perform, oversee and may coordinate the installation, repair, maintenance or replacement of vehicle systems and engine parts. Must be able to multitask and have excellent diagnostic skills and read, interpret wiring diagrams and hydraulic system flow charts. Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic and multiplexing system failures. Rebuild and replacement of major drive train components such as gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials and power dividers, hydraulic system components, etc. Perform routine brake inspections, replacements and adjustments on commercial vehicles following Federal DOT requirements. Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems and electronic hydraulic system malfunctions. Perform road calls, roadside repairs, tire replacements, preventive maintenance and repairs on in-field equipment. Services vehicles, heavy equipment per the department's maintenance schedules and or from vehicle, condition reports (VCR) and daily equipment inspection reports (DEIR). Field test vehicles or equipment to properly identify the malfunction and perform final operational test to quality check all repairs and maintenance. Assigns projects to subordinates, maintains record of duties performed and equipment used by a staff of mechanics, and approves tasks upon completion. Perform routine metal and aluminum welding, body repairs and component fabrication. Perform all mechanical, maintenance duties performed by subordinates on gasoline and diesel engines and related equipment. Create work orders on repairs and services providing legible and accurate information for work performed on paper and computer. Cleans and maintains the garages work areas. Pressure wash equipment for inspections, and prior to being worked on. Understand and follow all safety rules and Safety Operating Procedures (SOPs) and perform preventive maintenance and repairs within industry-standard repair times. May perform all work related to a heavy industrial automotive shop. Education, Experience, Licensing Required Qualifications Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED equivalent and two years of related mechanical experience (i.e., maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered equipment and vehicles or heavy industrial automotive, performing in-depth diagnostics, preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs from light to heavy vehicles). Must have complete set of mechanic's hand and pneumatic tools up to 1 ½" to efficiently perform required maintenance and repairs on county equipment. Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required. Preferred Qualifications Possession of a valid CDL A with no airbrake restriction and an acceptable driving record is preferred. •If candidate is hired with CDL A as preferred; this position will be safety-sensitive, which is subject to Drug & Alcohol Workplace testing as provided in DOT regulation 49CFR-parts 40 and /or 382.
Supplemental Information Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift at least 80 pounds.
Certifications:
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in Automobile or Medium/Heavy Truck are preferred.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of electrical systems, multiplexing systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, air conditioning and heating systems, gasoline and diesel engines, and transmissions.
Computer Skills:
Must be proficient with computers and capable of using fleet management and work order-based software programs and related tools.
Diagnostic Experience:
Preferred experience with diagnostic software for Mack, International, Cummins, and Ford. Ability to diagnose, locate, define, adjust, and repair major vehicle and equipment defects within industry-standard time limits.
Communication and Problem-Solving:
Excellent communication skills with the ability to use sound judgment and problem-solving skills to make appropriate decisions and recommendations. Must be able to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment with deadlines and changing priorities.
Work Locations:
May be required to work at various Fleet Services locations within Solid Waste.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM, with rotational Saturdays. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Flexibility to work varied hours in emergency situations is required.
