Under basic supervision, the Heavy Truck Technician, Lead is responsible for the repair, servicing, preventive maintenance, and inspection of gasoline, alternate fuels, and diesel-powered automobiles, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment; supervision of the shop floor and technicians on the nightshift with direction from Fleet Services Supervisor.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Service, troubleshoot, and perform complex heavy truck and automotive repairs on engines and related components of electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems. Diagnose and repair malfunctions of vehicle computer components. Perform preventive maintenance inspections and state vehicle inspections. Road tests vehicles and equipment for proper operation prior to returning to the user department. Cuts, grinds, and fabricates equipment as needed. Orders and receives parts. Assists and works with other technicians in performing complex repair problems. May respond to road calls and make on-site repairs. Under direction of the supervisor, leads the work activities of technicians on the nightshift. May weld metal components to repair parts for equipment and vehicles. Diagnoses and repairs malfunctioning hydraulic and cooling systems. Participates in cleaning and maintaining shop equipment and work areas. Oversees shop operations of nightshift and ensures technicians are following policies, procedures, and guidelines. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.Marginal Duties:

The incumbent is responsible for diagnoses of malfunctioning light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, and for determining the actions to be taken for their repair. Incumbent is also responsible for assignment of technician work orders and oversight of operations during the nightshift with direction from the Fleet Services Supervisor.Minimum Qualifications :
Knowledge of:
Methods of servicing, troubleshooting, diagnoses, and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer component malfunctions of automobiles; light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment; Federal, state, and local environmental and inspection laws and regulations applicable to vehicle and equipment standards.Skill in:
Communicating effectively bother verbally and in writing; using hand and power tools; operating a variety of computerized monitors, scanners, and analyzers with an understanding of computer codes to diagnose equipment and vehicle problems; reading, understanding, and utilizing technical repair manuals and schematics; operating a computer terminal.Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Completion of a technical or trade school program in automotive and heavy truck technology.Experience:
Ten (10) years of experience in the repair and service of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment with on-board computer components plus one (1) experience leading the work of others and demonstrated leadership capabilities. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above minimum qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.Licenses and Certifications:
Must maintain a Class A-CDL or a Class B-CDL. Must be able to obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety Inspection Certification within six (6) months of assignment to position. Must maintain a Master Medium/Heavy Truck ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification. Additional certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.Conditions of Employment :
Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.Physical Demands and Working Conditions :
Must possess mobility to work in and around city automotive shop facilities, to operate a motor vehicle; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance and repairs. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, dust, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
