We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Automotive Heavy Equipment and Diesel Technicians (Mechanics) to join our award-winning team. The successful Auto Technician (Mechanic) candidates will perform repairs, routine maintenance, and statutory inspections to the City's diverse fleet of heavy vehicles, construction equipment and or fire apparatus. Class A CDL training is provided by the City at no cost to employees. The twenty-hour mandatory behind the wheel time is conducted while on the clock…get paid to train! Vehicles for DMV road testing are also provided. Auto Technicians (Mechanics) are needed for the current facility at 956 Greenbrier Pkwy heavy equipment and fire shops. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel-powered trucks and construction equipment. Inspect, diagnose and repair Compressed Natural Gas fuel systems on garbage trucks. Perform preventive maintenance on heavy trucks and construction equipment. Perform routine maintenance such as building up, repairing, and changing tires. Perform major repairs such as engine overhaul, transmission repair, service and repair of hydraulic systems and complex sub-assemblies of heavy trucks and equipment. May perform vehicle modifications such as installing or removing special equipment, or other modifications. Perform Virginia safety inspections. Perform post-accident and annual CNG safety inspections. Perform shop or area maintenance such as general clean up around both the interior and exterior of the shop and property. Prepare documentation such as work order notes, repairs completed, parts used, repair cost, and other information. VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
: For Automotive Technician I, 10th grade in high school is required. Automotive Technician II and III require a high school diploma or GED/HSE and any combination of education and experience equivalent to the satisfactory completion of one year of college education in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of:
Automotive Technician I:
One year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Automotive Technician II:
Two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
: Requires a valid driver's license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards . Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within the probationary period. Virginia State Inspector License within probationary period.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
