Employees in this class perform a variety of tasks requiring considerable skill and dexterity in the operation of heavy construction equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, skid steer loader, asphalt paver and street sweepers. Assignment to this class presumes the operation of such equipment as a regular continuing activity. When not engaged in the operation of this equipment, the employee may drive a truck, operate light equipment or perform manual labor as required. Assignments are given in the form of oral or written orders which can be carried out with a minimum of supervision. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew of workers. Work is subject to review in progress or upon completion for results obtained.

Illustrative examples of work:

Operates a road grader to grade and shape roadways, shoulders and other areas. Operates a road grader to remove ice and snow. Operates a backhoe to excavate trenches and ditches for drainage work and laying pipe. Operates a front end loader to load bulk materials, debris or earth fill. Operates a mechanical street sweeper, skid steer loader, asphalt paver. Drives a dump truck to haul materials and plow snow. Detects and reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor. Performs related work as required. Supervises and participates with a small crew of workers engaged in road maintenance and related operations. Operates equipment or a truck to plow snow, sand/salt roadways and perform any and all tasks required for winter operations. Knowledge, abilities and skills: Some knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of heavy and complex construction equipment used in excavating, loading, grading and related work. Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to heavy and complex construction equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions and to work independently in the performance of assigned duties. Ability to detect and report equipment malfunctions. Ability to supervise small crews of unskilled workers. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for a reasonable length of time and under unfavorable weather conditions. Skills in the safe and efficient operation of heavy and complex construction equipment. Ability to deal with the public.

Minimum education and experience:

Graduation from high school or GED diploma Some experience in the operation of heavy and complex construction equipment.

Necessary special requirement:

Possession of a valid Rhode Island CDL Motor Vehicle License. Possession of a valid backhoe/loader Ltd. Hoisting engineer's license.
