Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job.
Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description Utilizes knowledge and equipment to accomplish given tasks in a safe and efficient manner. Operates a wide variety of motorized equipment, including heavy construction equipment, and hand/power tools. Installs, operates, repairs, and maintains tools and equipment. Loads and hauls materials and supplies; maintains inventory and stocks vehicles. Performs skilled labor tasks following established procedures. Maintains safe work environment and equipment. Adheres to safety standards. Documents work performed. Provides customer service. Assists other departments as needed. Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities No supervisory authority. Work does require providing guidance and training to others. Human Collaboration and Job Impact

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent.
1 to 3 years' experience in construction or operation of heavy equipment Licenses or Certifications Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Division specific CDL endorsements within 6 months of hire. Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
Knowledge of:
Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of trades. Safety standards and precautions pertaining to operations and maintenance of a variety of equipment and tools. Columbia geography and streets.
Skill in:
Operating motorized equipment, including heavy construction equipment, and hand/power tools. Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience. Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.
Ability to:
Read and follow written and oral directions. Work independently and as a member of a team. Maintain accurate records. Provide positive and effective customer service. Recognize, analyze and solve a variety of problems. Focus on tasks. Work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Ability to work on-call and respond at all hours of the day/night.

Positions assigned to the City Utilities Department are required to maintain a telephone and permanent residence within 50 road miles of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, Columbia, MO, within 90 days of hire. Work Environment
