CEO About Us:
WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to providing support and safety for survivors of interpersonal violence. Currently, we are seeking an experienced and compassionate On-Call HR Consultant to support our team in maintaining a healthy and legally compliant workplace.
Position Summary:
The On-Call HR Consultant will provide as-needed support in addressing complex personnel matters, including conflict resolution, staff coaching, and guidance around corrective actions. This role is ideal for an experienced HR professional who understands the nonprofit landscape and is well-versed in California employment law.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide real-time HR consultation in response to workplace conflicts, performance issues, and personnel concerns. Support supervisors and leadership in implementing corrective actions with clarity, compassion, and compliance. Offer confidential coaching to staff and managers, helping build effective communication and resolution strategies. Review or draft documentation related to disciplinary actions, performance improvement plans, or investigations. Advise on HR best practices specific to nonprofits and trauma-informed workplaces. Ensure compliance with all applicable California and federal employment laws.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in HR consulting, employee relations, or conflict resolution—ideally within nonprofit settings. Deep knowledge of California labor and employment laws. Ability to handle sensitive issues with professionalism, discretion, and cultural humility. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and be responsive on an as-needed basis. HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or
SHRM-SCP
) is preferred.
Preferred Qualities:
Experience working in or supporting trauma-informed or survivor-serving organizations. Understanding of the unique dynamics faced by nonprofits, including limited resources and values-based leadership. Familiarity with equity-centered HR practices is highly desirable.
