Job:
A Mill Carpenter sets up woodworking machines and performs machine operations to cut and detail rough lumber and draws, constructs, and installs doors, window frames, cases, cabinets, bookcases, and similar furniture and equipment.

Typical Job Duties of an incumbent include
  • Sets up and operates woodcutting, turning, shaping, molding, sanding, and surfacing machines used in manufacturing wooden parts for doors, window frames, cases, cabinets, and similar furniture and equipment, as guided by blueprints, mill tickets, and scale drawings
  • Selects and installs cutting tools in a variety of woodworking machines
  • Lubricates, adjusts, cleans, and maintains mill machines
  • Checks the quality of lumber to be used in products
  • Develops and prepares working drawings, sketches, and scale drawings of woodworking products
  • May assist in preparing specifications for woodworking hardware and other materials
  • May assist in making estimates of costs for material and labor
  • May enter and retrieve work orders using computers or other peripheral equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
Experience:
One year of journey-level experience as a woodworker, including cabinet making or joinery experience and completion of a wood worker apprenticeship or five years of experience in cabinet making or joinery.

Special Physical Requirement
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull and safely lift and carry items that weigh up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to work safely at heights including the use of ladders, scaffolds, and other related equipment
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Safety precautions to be observed in a wood mill and other work sites
  • Qualities and characteristics of a variety of woods and wood-related products used in fabricating cabinets, furniture, and equipment

  • Operate and maintain a variety of woodworking machines and equipment
  • Read and work from blueprints, mill tickets, and scale drawings
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Develop sketches and scale drawings
  • Prepare material lists, estimates, and surveys
