Weeks of May 5 and 12, 2025 The Ontario Fire Department is seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter Trainee. The Firefighter Trainee is a non-sworn, entry level position responsible for learning to perform a variety of operations in fighting fires and responding to calls for assistance. The Firefighter Trainee will attend a departmental academy to develop and demonstrate the minimum qualifications required to become a Firefighter. The Firefighter Trainee classification is unique in that it offers the successful candidate the ability to promote from Firefighter Trainee to Firefighter without a competitive recruitment, at the discretion of the Department upon successful completion of the Ontario Fire Department Academy. Examples of Essential Functions The essential functions typically performed by theFIREFIGHTER TRAINEE
include but are not limited to the following: Attends scheduled academy training sessions; learns proper firefighting techniques for fighting structural, wildland and other types of fires. Receives instruction and participates in field training to learn proper terminology, procedures and become proficient in emergency and rescue activities including but not limited to emergency medical services, extrication, heavy rescue, and hazardous materials. Learns to respond to emergency and routine alarms as part of a firefighting team. Learns and practices safety, care, usage, and maintenance of firefighting equipment, facilities, and apparatus. Learns to perform fire inspections and other fire prevention activities. Participates in daily drills and training activities while focusing on safe work practices. Participates in a physical fitness program. May respond to major emergencies during training periods to observe emergency operations. Qualification Guidelines Education High School diploma or recognized equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application. License Valid Class C California driver's license or officially recognized equivalent. An acceptable driving record is required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Certifications If you do not possess the required certifications below, you will need to obtain them prior to the completion of the Fire background investigation and maintain them throughout your employment. CPR certification from American Heart Association Healthcare Provider. Title 22 Public Safety First Aid certification. Current EMT- OR•Paramedic certification will satisfy the First Aid requirement.
- AND•successful completion of either a Cal-JAC Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT)•OR•Biddle Physical Agility Test.
