The City of Fairfax is seeking a skilled and dedicated Emergency Vehicle Technician II to join our Fleet Services team. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing our Fire Department's specialized fleet, including fire apparatus, ambulances, and other emergency response vehicles. As an Emergency Vehicle Technician II, you will perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of emergency vehicles and specialized firefighting equipment. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with industry standards, maintaining fleet readiness, and responding to emergency breakdowns when needed. This is a skilled mechanical repair position requiring independent judgment and the ability to work under general supervision. Examples Of Duties Diagnose and repair fire department vehicles, including ladder trucks, pumpers, ambulances, and specialized firefighting equipment. Perform maintenance and testing of essential systems such as fire pumps, aerial apparatus, diesel/gasoline engines, and electronic controls. Conduct preventive maintenance to ensure fleet readiness. Perform inspections and testing to ensure compliance with NFPA, OSHA, and other relevant regulations. Operate and maintain a variety of shop tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic instruments. Respond to emergency breakdowns and perform on-site repairs when necessary. Participates in after-hours on-call rotation. Work collaboratively with the Fleet Operations Manager and external service providers to coordinate vehicle maintenance. Assist in vehicle specifications and design for new fire department fleet purchases. Conduct Virginia State inspections for city-owned vehicles. This position is designated as Essential. As an essential employee, you will be expected to report to work during inclement weather occurrences or other emergencies. This position is vital in maintaining continuity and efficiency of operations. The duties listed above are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED supplemented by formal training in automotive and diesel mechanics. Extensive experience in the repair and maintenance of emergency vehicles and fire department equipment. Strong knowledge of diesel/gasoline engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic components. Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Experience using diagnostic tools and fleet management software. Four years of experience in fleet maintenance, including medium and heavy-duty vehicle repairs.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

(Required or to be obtained within 12 months) Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N, P, and air brake endorsements (or ability to obtain within six months). Virginia State Vehicle Inspector Certification.

Welding and fabrication experience. Ability to work in a high-demand emergency service environment. Strong customer service and communication skills. Supplemental Information Selected candidates with an active CDL will receive a $2,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year). Work Hours:
