Work Calendars Primary Purpose:
Deter crime, be visible and ready to respond, address criminal activity, and mitigate threats. Be a role model, a mentor, help students when in need, and be involved in the school community. Support student well-being, identify the individual needs of each student, and serve as an advocate for students to give them opportunities to succeed. Work in collaboration with the district and community as a resource for safety and security issues.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Texas Peace Officer License issued by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or;
  • Honorably retired Texas Peace Officer with the ability to reactivate TCOLE certification within 60 days
  • Clear and valid Texas driver's license
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Texas Education Code, Texas Family Code, and juvenile laws and procedures.
  • Skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Training and ability to subdue offenders, including the use of firearms and handcuffs
  • Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug tests.
  • Ability to work well with youth and adults.
  • Ability to wear a bulletproof vest weighing approximately 5 lbs.
  • Ability to carry a police duty belt at waist level weighing approximately 15-20 lbs., containing a gun, handcuffs, radio, and ammunition.
  • Prior to assuming duties on a school campus, all safety officers shall complete: 1.
All training required for commissioned peace officers through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE); 2. The psychological and medical examinations required by TCOLE for certification as a peace officer, in accordance with 37 Texas Administrative Code § 217.3, unless the peace officer has been employed with the district as an interim security officer and completed this requirement within 180 days of their commission; 3. Training required by the district, including, but not limited to, training on: a. Student mental health, including suicide awareness; b. Trauma-informed care; c. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and anti-bias approaches to school-based law enforcement; d. Age-appropriate responses; e. Restorative justice techniques; f. Child abuse identification and reporting; g. Bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, and dating violence; h. Special accommodations for students with disabilities (including behavior de-escalation techniques); i. Confidentiality; j. Board Policies and District Regulations; and k. Human trafficking
Experience:
  • Background in law enforcement or related work experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Administrative Support and Law Enforcement:
  • Patrol assigned locations in car, on foot and any other means of transportation within district jurisdiction
  • Respond to all calls from campuses concerning crisis situations, accidents, and reports of crime
  • Write effective incident reports
  • Work cooperatively with police agencies to share information and provide other assistance
  • Provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed
  • Use sound judgement and effectively communicate with and elicit information from emotionally distraught students, staff, parents, and citizens
  • Provide assistance to campuses/departments as requested
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, documents required, incident reports, and activity reports
