Salary and BenefitsWastewater Collection Operator II Starting Salary:
43 ($42,708/year)Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $64,062/year, which is the maximum salaryfor this position as of December 2024.
Wastewater Collection Operator III Starting Salary:
48 ($48,320/year)Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $72,480/year, which is the maximum salaryfor this position as of December 2025.
Wastewater Collection Operator IV Starting Salary:
54 ($56,036/year)Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $84,054/year, which is the maximum salaryfor this position as of December 2024.

Position SummaryDrives and operates a variety of mobile or stationary construction and maintenance equipment for theCity of St. George. This is skilled work in light equipment operation and requires minor routinemaintenance of related equipment.
Essential Functions:
(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, mayinclude the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrativeonly and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)Wastewater Operator II
  • Operates at least two of the following items of construction equipment: loader, backhoe, dualtransmission truck, dump truck, trailer, extend-a-jet, C.C.T.V. analysis truck, combination jet rodvacuum truck, portable pumps, welders, programmable flow meter, sampler, and miscellaneouspower hand tools.
  • May be assigned to operate various pieces of equipment, and to perform minor maintenance onequipment assigned.
  • Operates equipment for projects such as excavating trenches and sewer lines, backfilling holes andtrenches, hauling, and clearing plugged sewer lines and storm drains, etc.
  • May assist in the loading and unloading of trucks, laying pipe in trenches, using air jack hammers to break out concrete and asphalt, or other types of general physical labor.
  • May be required to program flow meters and samplers and to operate laptop computer for collectingdata.
  • Performs routine maintenance or emergency repairs as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Wastewater Operator III, IV
  • Operates and maintains, with minimum guidance and instruction, a variety of wastewater relatedmachinery and equipment in one of the following areas: construction, system maintenance, or systemmonitoring. Maintains skill level for all equipment in the area assigned.
  • Performs routine, minor, and emergency maintenance and repair of all equipment. Keeps equipmentclean and presentable. Reports any problems that require additional maintenance.
  • Cross trains on equipment in areas other than assigned in order to assist in department as needed.
  • Observes all aspects of collection systems and other wastewater City facilities. Corrects problems asthey are found or refers them to the appropriate supervisor as needed.
  • Trains operators in the proper operation of the equipment according to the manufacturer's guidelines,as well as all other tasks related to the work.
  • Trains operators in all safety procedures and requirements relating to the work being performed andthe equipment being used, including confined space and other OSHA regulations.
  • Acts as a crew leader in the department, including maki g reasonable decisions, using goodjudgment, and making efficient use of time and resources. Displays initiative in problem solving andproviding services.
  • Provides courteous, professional, and helpful service to the public and other City departments.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working ConditionsPeriodically disagreeable working conditions such as working outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather.

Exposure to water, mud, dirt, and grease. May require frequent exposure to disagreeable conditions,including fumes, odors, chemicals, infectious waste, equipment noise and vibration, traffic, heat, cold,and dampness. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift up to 50-100 pounds offorce occasionally and/or 20-50 pounds of force frequently. Difficult working positions. May have tostand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Frequent exposure to health andoccupational hazards under controlled safety conditions. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result ofhuman behavior.
Note:
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts duringemergency situations, are required to be on call or stand-by, and must have a 15-minute responsetime.
  • Employees in this classification are required to pass a Respiratory Physical Test.
QualificationsEducation:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years full time experience in the proper operation and maintenance ofvarious types of equipment and thorough understanding of laws governing operation of motorvehicles desired.
Licenses:
  • Possess a valid driver license.
Must possess or obtain a valid Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL)learner permit with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire, and must possess or obtain a validUtah Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within seven (7) months ofhire.
Certifications:
  • Certification by the Utah Department of Transportation in construction signing and flagging within six (6) months of hire.
Operator Certification:
Operator II
  • Must acquire Certificate I and Certificate II within one (1) year; will remain onprobation until acquired.
Failure to do so may result in loss of position. All accredited certificationsmust be kept current.

Operator III
  • Career progression: moves to Operator III when Operator III certification is acquired.
Operator IV
  • Career progression: moves to Operator IV when Operator IV certification is acquiredand has a minimum of two years' experience working in a waste water collection system.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to:
  • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by becoming certified as aWastewater Collection Operator.
  • Utilize current principles and practices involved in wastewater collection.
  • Learn operational characteristics of wastewater and storm drain collection systems.
  • Learn tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of wastewater and storm drain systems.
  • Detect or learn to detect needed repairs, and to make necessary simple adjustments to equipment.
  • Operate or learn to operate a variety of heavy equipment, trucks, and other related equipment used inwastewater collection.
  • Apply or learn to apply rules of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)construction standards, including trenching and confined space safety.
  • Communicate well with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technicallanguage.
  • Understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to fit into and descend down through a 24" manhole
