Candidates who attain a passing score on the entry level exam will be placed on the department's eligibility list. Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in activities related to law enforcement, crime prevention and investigation and other direct public service activities; performs related work as required.Examples of Duties:
Enforces and upholds the Constitution of the United States, the State of Ohio and the Charter of the City of Toledo and faithfully, honestly and impartially discharges the duties of office according to law and the Police Division manual, rules, regulations, orders, policies and procedures; performs long periods of routine patrol while remaining prepared to react quickly to emergency situations and while being continually aware in discerning out-of- the-ordinary conditions or circumstances which indicate trouble or a crime-in-progress; drives a vehicle under normal and emergency situations; uses mature judgment in problem-solving in situations such as a family disturbance, a potential suicide, a crime or offense in progress, an accident, a disaster and other similar emergencies; provides temporary service as needs may arise, including direction of traffic and giving medical assistance; uses mature judgment in deciding when to make an arrest or to use necessary force as needed in any particular situation or emergency; performs intelligible and grammatically correct communication and recordkeeping functions including oral and written reports to be used by the department or in court; tolerates stress in situations where subjected to verbal or physical abuse, e.

Rule 50.00, Section 50.11 (Veterans' Preference Credit in Examinations): A veteran, as defined in these rules, receiving a passing grade on a competitive recruitment examination shall have five (5) numerical points added to his/her passing score. A disabled veteran, as defined in these rules, who satisfies any physical requirements for the position, and receives a passing grade on a competitive recruitment examination, shall have ten (10) numerical points added to his/her passing score. Nothing contained herein shall be construed as excepting any applicant from the necessity of fulfilling all job-related requirements specified by the Commission for positions in the competitive class. Rule 10.00, Section 10.37 (Veteran): Shall mean a person who has served in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Corps, Air Forces, Coast Guard, and such other military service or auxiliary corps as is designed by the Congress of the United States, and has served on active duty for a period of more than one hundred eighty (180) consecutive days of active duty, excluding active duty for training (annual summer camp) and who received an honorable discharge or release or was separated under honorable conditions. A disabled veteran is one who has served on active duty in the Armed Forces, has been separated there from under honorable conditions, and has established the present existence of a service connected disability rated ten percent (10%) or more. OPOTC Certification Preference inExaminations :
OPOTC Certification preferences are provided under the Rules of the Toledo Civil Service Commission, Rule 50.00, Section 50.23. For purposes of ensuring appointment and employment based on merit, efficiency, moral character and industry, an individual receiving a passing grade on a competitive recruitment examination for employment as a Police Officer shall be awarded preference points to their raw score for having obtained, at the final closing date for the Civil Service examination, certifications in accordance with the following: Completion and passage of a Peace Officer Basic Training Academy that has been approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) within two (2) years of the final closing date for the Civil Service examination, OR an active OPOTC certificate and current employment in a law enforcement agency within the State of Ohio. To receive the five (5) extra points, the candidate must present a copy of their OPOTC certificate. EMT/Paramedic Certification Preference inExaminations :
EMT/Paramedic Certification preferences are provided under the Rules of the Toledo Civil Service Commission, Rule 50.00, Section 50.22. For purposes of ensuring appointment and employment based on merit, efficiency, moral character and industry, an individual receiving a passing grade on a competitive recruitment examination for employment as a police officer shall be awarded preference points to their raw score for having obtained, prior to the examination, certifications in accordance with the following schedule: EMT-B Certification- three (3) numerical points; EMT-A Certification
- four (4) numerical points; EMT-P (Paramedic) Certification
- five (5) numerical points.
