DEFINITION
To plan, organize, direct and supervise municipal fleet maintenance operations within the Public Works Department; and to perform a variety of technical tasks related to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of skilled automotive and equipment maintenance and repair related to a full-service municipal fleet environment. Equipment, tools and materials used in the repair and maintenance of modern and sophisticated automotive, light and heavy equipment, transit vehicles, and alternative fuel vehicles. Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluations. Principles of budget monitoring. Principles and practices of safety management. Pertinent local, State and Federal laws, ordinances and rules.
Ability to:
Organize, implement and direct skilled maintenance operations related to the City's vehicle and equipment fleet. On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures. On a continuous basis, sit at desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; intermittently walk, bend, twist or stoop while performing site inspections; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 10 pounds of less. Interpret and explain pertinent City and department policies and procedures. Assist in the development and monitoring of an assigned program budget. Develop and recommend policies and procedures related to assigned operations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff.
Experience and Training Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in skilled automotive and light/heavy equipment maintenance duties, including one year of lead responsibility.
AND Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, GED, or higher level degree supplemented by college course work in automotive maintenance or a related field. SELECTION PROCESS
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their application scored in a Formula Rate Examination. The applicant's experience and education will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the Employment List. Supplemental questions will be utilized by the department hiring authority to make interview and selection determinations. Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check, and depending on the position applied for, a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol screening test, credit check, license and/or education verification, psychological examination, and/or an extensive Police Department background check process. Some positions require the clearance of a comprehensive Police Department (PD) background check within 12 months of appointment. The City may appoint candidates to positions prior to clearing the extensive Police Department background check, and in those circumstances the candidate will be advised in advance that security access in the information technology systems will be limited to non-PD related systems until PD clearance is received, and if the candidate ultimately does not clear the PD background it will result in release from City service without appeal rights, in accordance with Personnel Rules 3.04.050.
