Also have the ability to load, transport and unload such equipment on low boy trailer. Position is under the direct supervision of Water Distribution Supervisor and/or Foreman. Position is part of Water Distribution maintenance and repair crew and is expected to assist in aspects other than equipment operation if requested to do so. Due to the nature of water distribution systems, it may be necessary at times to work through normal lunch and break periods if system customers are without service. However, these periods will be allowed either after service is restored or within an acceptable time frame as determined by job foreman. This position is required to participate and be part of a weekly after-hours emergency standby call-out roster. While on call, employee must be able, ready, and available to report to the Operations yard within one hour of being called. It may also be required at times to work unscheduled overtime in order to restore service. Performs other tasks as requested. Examples of Duties Skillfully operates medium and heavy construction equipment such as backhoe, trencher, assorted heavy trucks and other equipment necessary to construct and/or repair water mains, services, meters, valves, etc. Assists as required with general construction and laboring tasks associated with the repair, maintenance and construction of water distribution system. Operates and maintains equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Loads and hauls fill, excavated spoil, rock, Marl, and other materials to and from job site. Safely loads, transports, and unloads heavy equipment from "low boy" trailer. Transports equipment to and from job site on "tilt deck" trailer pulled by 14 yd. tandem axle dump truck. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or G.E.D. is required. Minimum three (3) years of experience in the use and operation of heavy vehicles and heavy construction equipment, as they relate to construction and repair of water distribution systems. Must have a valid Class B State of Florida Commercial Driver's license with air brake endorsement or possess a Class B temporary permit and obtain a permanent license within 6 months of hire. Applicants who possess an out of state Class "B" Commercial Driver's license with an air brake endorsement must obtain the Florida license within 10 days of employment. Applicant will be selected based on highest score for hands on and written skills test. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge and skill to operate computers, work order and preventative maintenance software to include Work, Excel, email and internet. Knowledge and skill to navigate and maneuver through the City's web based GIS mapping system. Knowledge of occupational safety rules, and practices, as they relate to heavy equipment, and water distribution repair/construction. Skill to operate and perform routine maintenance on medium and heavy equipment. Ability to both understand and communicate oral and written instruction. Ability to both interpret and complete work order forms. Ability to perform strenuous work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions. Skill in the safe operation of medium and heavy equipment as it relates to the installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution systems. Skill in the safe operation of medium and heavy equipment in and around areas that have other underground utilities such as sewer and/or gas mains, telephone or T.V. cable, etc. Skill in the safe operation of large dump trucks while pulling a trailer loaded with equipment. Knowledge of City water distribution system. Knowledge of Area roadways as they relate to weight restrictions, and heavy vehicles and/or equipment.
