Job Description
This position will assist in all aspects of the plumbing trade. Primary duties involve assisting skilled tradesmen in duties necessary to operate and maintain University Plumbing systems efficiently and reliably to provide a comfortable environment in classrooms, laboratories, and offices on campus. Essential Functions:
Assists in the maintenance or repair of plumbing fixtures including but not limited to faucets, toilets, traps, and other similar devices. Performs inspections, minor repairs and maintenance to the following systems: Boilers, Hot water and chilled water systems and associated plumbing equipment. Assists with maintenance and repair of piping systems including but not limited to domestic water, sewer drains, storm drains, steam lines, and other similar systems. Assists with repairs of chillers, water cooling towers, energy recovery heat exchangers, pumps, automatic and hand valves, and similar equipment. Operates a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintains equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintains parts and tool inventory. Assists in troubleshooting and maintenance off fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary. Responds in a timely manner to work orders and maintains related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintains log of tasks performed and writes reports as required. Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair. Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service. Must respond within 30 minutes. Supports campus wide activities in the areas of event setups, snow and ice removal and any other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent GED. Less than two years of experience in plumbing or a combination of experience and education from which a similar skillset would be obtained. Must be able to obtain a journeyman license within 3- 5 years. Must be willing to receive additional training as required. Required to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes. Must be able to follow verbal and written directions and provide responses in writing. Ability to use computers to read and respond to emails and to use basic applications is also required. This position requires the possession and maintenance of a valid Virginia vehicle operator's license and a good driving record.Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent GED. A minimum of 3- 5 years of experience in residential/commercial plumbing systems, or a combination of experience and education from which a similar skillset would be obtained. Journeyman or master's certification in plumbing is preferred. Must be willing to receive additional training as required. Required to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes. Must be able to follow verbal and written directions and provide responses in writing. Ability to use computers to read and respond to emails and to use basic applications is also required. This position requires the possession and maintenance of a valid Virginia vehicle operator's license and a good driving record.Work Schedule:

The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside. The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity. The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. The worker frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. The worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.Types of Work:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Position Type:
