This is skilled work assisting in constructing, maintaining, and repairing the electrical transmission and distribution system. Work involves increasingly difficult and skilled tasks approaching Lineman 1st Class level as the training level progresses. The employee works under the supervision of a Lineman 1st Class or T & D Lead person. This posting will close after the receipt of 60 qualified applicants.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists in placing poles, pulling wire, and supplying equipment to linemen. Climbs poles, installs and removes cross arms, street lights, various equipment and materials. Keeps vehicles stocked with required parts and materials. Assists in troubleshooting transmission and distribution system problems. Installs and maintains 600-volt circuits unsupervised. Constructs and maintains energized high-voltage equipment and lines while supervised. May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department. Position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
May be assigned to operate any vehicle or equipment or inspect poles and attachments. Performs related work as required.QUALIFICATIONS
(EDUCATION, TRAININGAND EXPERIENCE
) High school diploma from an accredited school or aGED. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with "nine (9) points or less" and Tanker Trailer endorsements within three (3) months of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in electrical transmission and distribution system construction and maintenance. Some knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to a transmission and distribution system. Skill in using tools, instruments, and equipment related to electrical work. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions in English. Ability to read and understand blueprints. Ability and willingness to learn various skilled electrical construction and maintenance tasks. Ability to learn and observe safety practices and procedures relating to work on an energized transmission and distribution system. Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public. Ability to complete the training program leading to the Lineman 1st Class classification.WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires work that involves climbing, walking, or standing frequently, exerting up to 51 pounds of force regularly. The job risks exposure to the following conditions included but not limited to electrical shock, adverse weather conditions, extreme hot/cold temperatures, confined areas, dust, pollen, traffic, toxic/noxious fumes, extreme noise levels, heights, bright/dim light, and working hours during daylight and night hours. Requires the ability to safely work in proximity to energized high-voltage power lines and equipment. Requires working in confined spaces and heights above 100 feet. The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
