Employment Type:
Full-Time The City of Bay City is seeking a skilled Lineworker A for our Bay City Electric Light & Power Department . This is a skilled journeyman-level position that involves performing tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in the maintenance, repair, and construction of electric underground and overhead distribution facilities, sub-transmission facilities, transmission facilities, and related electrical equipment. This role also requires responding to trouble calls to restore electrical service in the event of outages or other issues, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Construct, maintain, and repair underground and overhead electric distribution and transmission systems , including installing poles, cross arms, anchors, underground conduit, wire, transformers, switches, arrestors, insulators, regulators, breakers, structures, lighting, and other related electric devices. Serve as a trouble-call worker , working independently to restore power in emergencies; may call for assistance as needed. Provide emergency stand-by service during evenings and weekends. Install and replace customer service drops ; perform reconnects and disconnects of customer services. Assist in training and instructing apprentices and new employees. Work in compliance with all City safety rules, regulations, and policies . Occasionally assist with line clearance activities . Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or GED equivalent . Completion of a recognized Lineworker apprenticeship program . Understanding of construction and maintenance of electric underground and overhead distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission facilities. Knowledge of the principles and operation of transformers, regulators, and other electrical devices . Demonstrated ability to climb utility poles and work efficiently using climbing hooks. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and collaborate with other employees effectively. Ability to interact professionally with the public. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license with appropriate CDL certification .
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
Must have mental, visual, and manual dexterity for sustained periods. Exposure to intermittent elements (weather conditions, heights, confined spaces, etc.). Must be able to perform moderate manual labor , including walking, shoveling, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, lifting, twisting, and squatting regularly. Routinely lift 50-75 lbs. and exert force up to 100 lbs. . Climbing poles, ladders, and working in confined spaces is a routine part of the job. Must have mental agility to solve moderately complex problems. High degree of accuracy required.
