Final Offer of Employment Essential Functions:
Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (including traffic, criminal and civil) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security. Patrols assigned areas via motor vehicle or on foot to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects doors, windows, and premises of residential/commercial buildings/properties to ensure security or to detect suspicious conditions; responds to active alarms at residences, businesses, and industries; takes complaints and prepares detailed reports; maintains high visibility in the community. Enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, and DUI laws; uses visual observation and radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws; stops and interviews traffic law violators; issues parking tickets, warnings, or citations; searches vehicles when necessary; conducts field sobriety tests; assists stranded motorists or motorists in need of directions. Responds to traffic accidents/complaints; investigates collisions/accidents involving fatalities, personal injuries, and hit-and-run drivers; measures accident scenes and makes drawings of accidents; reviews evidence, reconstructs accidents, and makes recommendations; investigates traffic hazards; coordinates removal of debris or other hazards from roadways. Investigates bomb threats; defuses civil disturbances; investigates deaths, including deaths from natural causes, suicides, homicide, and vehicle accidents; conducts preliminary investigation of misdemeanor and felony offenses; investigates suspicious persons/vehicles. Investigates and secures crime scene for detectives; assists in collecting evidence; assists District Attorney when needed; maintains knowledge of crimes committed; testifies in court; provides court security. Assists the Fire Department and other law enforcement agencies; assists ambulance personnel. Reports and investigates any and all suspicious situations; watches traffic flow; reports broken traffic lights, street and sign damage; chases and captures vicious animals; rescues injured or lost pets. Maintains order during natural disasters and public gatherings; directs traffic; performs school traffic patrol; provides funeral escort to cemetery; provides parade escorts. Serves and executes warrants; serves subpoenas issued by the court; works closely with court personnel to ensure warrant is served in a timely manner; communicates with court personnel pertaining to warrants that are unservable. Locates and arrests suspects; maintains current list on all warrants and subpoenas issued by the court; searches suspects; interviews suspects; transports prisoners. Prepares and conducts classes and gives presentations to various schools, churches, youth groups, and civic groups regarding crime prevention, drugs, gangs, and bicycle safety. Counsels juveniles about crimes; returns juveniles to parents; advises parents of juvenile's activities; locates runaway children. Performs driver's license checks; inspects suspects' status for warrants; transports transients to City limits. Prepares a variety of incident, accident and offense reports and transmits as appropriate. Assists in training new recruits. Maintains cleanliness of assigned uniform, weapon, and patrol vehicle; ensures functioning of all equipment in vehicle; prepares and transmits related reports. Operates a variety of standard/specialized police equipment, motor vehicles, firearms, radar/laser equipment, alcohol testing equipment, restraining devices, communications equipment, personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, Internet, or other computer applications. Attends shift meetings, training sessions, and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations/activities, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; participates in physical fitness training and continuing education activities; reads professional literature; maintains professional certifications and affiliations. Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations. Knowledge of constitutional case law as it applies to law enforcement. Knowledge of criminal laws, codes, ordinances, and new procedures. Knowledge of computer data entry systems and word processing applications. Skill in operating and controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. Ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations. Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations. Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving high risk to the organization.Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by completion of Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) program; supplemented by little or no previous experience involving law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Licenses or Certifications:
Valid State of Alabama driver's license; Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification; radar, firearms, pepper spray andNCIC/ACJIC
