Maintains the mechanical and biological operations of the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant; performs other duties as required or assigned.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The principal function of an employee in this class is to maintain the mechanical and biological operations of the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a wastewater treatment plant environment with exposure to hazardous chemicals, airborne and waterborne pathogens, and high voltage electricity. Essential Functions Statement(s) Collects water samples and sludge at scheduled time intervals and conducts tests on samples to determine plant efficiency and compliance with EPA and State regulations. Maintains complete and accurate records of plant operation functions, tests, results, and maintenance work performed in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures as required. Operates a variety of mechanical equipment to regulate the flow of wastewater through various treatment processes, and to ensure the production of effluent water. Performs treatment analysis and processes control tests. Adjusts equipment to maintain treatment parameters, and to maintain even flows to ensure maximum efficiency of plant equipment. Inspects plant equipment and reports any failures or operating difficulties to designated personnel as required. Performs basic maintenance of plant equipment to ensure compliance with established standards, including cleaning, lubricating, and making minor repair as necessary. Observes meters, gauges, charts, and instruments, and accurately records all findings accordingly. Ensures all chemicals are handled in a safe and proper manner. Operates a variety of hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles, including backhoe, dump truck, slinger truck, tractor trailer, pickup truck, vans, tractors, belt press machine, and other related as required. Performs work in the biosolids process of thickening, dewatering, and drying beds. Maintains the interior and exterior of the Treatment Plant in a clean and orderly manner to ensure a safe work environment for City employees and the general public, including cleaning buildings, sand blasting, and painting equipment and buildings as necessary Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned including attending meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviewing publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.ESSENTIAL RELATIONSHIP EXPECTATIONS

Some knowledge of the basic principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant operations Some knowledge of the proper and efficient operation of plant equipment. Some knowledge of primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes and related laboratory tests. Some knowledge of the use and maintenance of related hand and power tools. Some knowledge of the basic principles of record keeping. Some knowledge of Federal, State, and City safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Some knowledge of mathematics, physics, and fluid flow to ensure accurate and efficient measurements and calculations. Some knowledge of related electrical and electronics principles and troubleshooting techniques.SKILLS/ABILITIES
Ability to efficiently and effectively operate and maintain related plant equipment, including computerized and mechanical equipment as required. Ability to perform standardized chemical control tests and other related laboratory tests as required. Ability to operate related hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles, including front end loader, truck, backhoe, tractor, and other related as required. Ability to analyze mathematical and physical data in an efficient and precise manner. Ability to collect, test, and analyze water samples. Ability to work all shifts on a rotating basis. Ability to work in an outdoors environment over extended periods of time in a variety of terrains and weather conditions. Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and high voltage electricity in a safe and proper manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public. Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language. Education:
High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED):Required Experience:
1 plus years of experience in wastewater treatment plant or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.Computer Skills:
Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.Certifications & Licenses:
Wastewater OIT License within 6 months of employment and/or Wastewater I License within 12 months of employment.Other Requirements:
Have or secure a resident telephone within 30 days of employment. Must live within a thirty-minute response time of the wastewater treatment plant.
