$49,581.00 - $56,618.00 ANNUALLY
BACKGROUND CHECK
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
PROBATION
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation.
ELIGIBILITY
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION
Applicants' education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
CLASS DESCRIPTION
An Automotive Mechanic performs a wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair work on a variety of automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment. Work of this class involves no lead or supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours and are subject to callback. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors, dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.
SELECTION PROCESS
All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION
Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
AND EXPERIENCE
Have four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other mechanical equipment.
OR EQUIVALENCY NOTES
Have six months of additional experience in automotive maintenance and repair work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement or completion of one year of the required coursework in an automotive mechanic curriculum in an accredited high school, vocational school or college or university may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement or an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in automotive technology or a related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement or completion of a recognized Motor Equipment Mechanic apprenticeship program may be substituted for the experience requirement.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES
Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver's permit.
PROVISIONAL DRIVER'S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. NOTE

Knowledge of electrical fuel, drive, engine, brake and related gasoline and diesel equipment and the techniques of their repair. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used to repair a variety of automotive and other mechanical equipment. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. Knowledge of the practices and methods of automotive equipment maintenance. Knowledge of the tools and materials required in automotive equipment maintenance. Ability to repair, replace and adjust the above systems. Ability to read and understand service manuals, parts catalogs, schematics and written work rules. Ability to road test equipment. Ability to prepare and maintain records.
EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. NOTES:
Employees will receive an hourly stipend for up to eight ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certificates obtained and maintained. Employees must provide their own tools.
