Municipal Employees Union Independent The Highway Laborer/Driver performs road and other Town property maintenance and repair activities including operating and maintaining light and heavy-duty trucks used for plowing snow, hauling sand, gravel, recyclables, trash and construction equipment and operating tools and equipment used to perform general duties. The Highway Laborer/Driver may be required to perform work in related areas of the Parks Department and Transfer Station as assigned. Supervision Received Works under the immediate direction of the Department of Public Works Director, or their designee. Typical Duties Utilizes hand tools and equipment including shovels, rakes, tampers, saws, etc. for the maintenance and installation of roads, piping systems, drainage, sidewalks and other areas or facilities owned by the Town of Stafford. Operates trucks and related equipment used for performing various tasks including snow plowing and removal, sanding, tree removal, mowing, drainage repair and projects as assigned. Operates snowplow, snow shovel, snow blower, and sander for winter weather operations. Operates and maintains tree service equipment including bucket truck, wood chipper, chain saw, leaf vacuum, etc. May maintain athletic fields; mowing, grooming, striping, and lining. May operate and maintain lawn mowing equipment and various landscaping equipment. In addition, performs basic maintenance on above equipment and will assist the mechanics with repairs. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid commercial motor vehicle operator's license. CDL Class B required. CDL Class A preferred. Basic computer skills including web navigation and e-mail communication required. Must be willing to actively participate as a member of a Public Works Team and perform work in a courteous and professional manner. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in equipment operation as well as occupational hazards and safety precautions. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Skilled in the operation of equipment over rough, slippery and difficult terrain. Previous experience operating heavy equipment such as a loader, backhoe, mini excavator and skid steer preferred. Previous experience in snow removal including plowing, sanding and clearing parking lots and pedestrian areas preferred. Physical Requirements The Highway Department Laborer/Driver is a physically demanding position performed primarily in field locations. The applicant will be required to successfully complete pre-employment drug testing and applicable random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment. Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Frequently required to handle or operate objects, controls, tools and equipment. Frequently the employee is required to reach; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; climb or balance. Must be able to see and hear. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move up to eighty (80) pounds. The employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions being exposed to cold, heat, rain, snow and wind. May work beyond normal working hours, weekends, holidays, and in other positions when necessary. Employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fire, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee may be exposed to rodents, insects and other wildlife. The noise level in the field is moderate to excessive. Work Schedule This is a full-time forty (40) hour position. The regular schedule is 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday with summer seasonal schedule variation of 6:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday.
